Top Five Property Turn-offs

When it comes to viewing a property, there are many key areas that potential buyers will be looking at, depending on their needs.  However, no matter what the requirements of the viewer, they will all be looking for a clean, tidy property that makes them feel at home.

So, what are the biggest turn-offs when it comes to viewing a property? We asked the experts – ASPC’s social media followers!

Bad smells

From cigarette smoke to wet dog, the biggest no-no according to ASPC’s followers is a smelly house. The problem can be that you get used to the smell of your own property – whether it is nice or nasty. It is best to get a second opinion, from a family member, friend or neighbour to see if there is any overwhelming smell.

Forego the ‘baking bread’ trick though: fresh flowers and scented candles were top tips from our Facebook followers.

Dirty washing

Dirty dishes or, even worse, clothes, should be hidden away or cleaned.

It is understandable to have a dirty mug on the sideboard, but a series of dirty dishes, or a basket full of clothes waiting to be cleaned is not a welcome sight. As well as potentially contributing to the smell issue, it makes the house seem unkempt, and could even cause suspicion about the working state of the washing machine.

Unmade bed

One of the easiest ways to make your house seem a little bit tidier is to make the bed – and tuck your pyjamas under your pillow.

A nicely made bed with plumped up pillows will make a bedroom seem like home.

Untidy garden

From uncut grass to unkempt trees and bushes, the garden can be the first impression of a house, so make sure it is a good one!

Rake any leaves, mow the lawn and trim any untidy bushes to make sure the garden is spick and span.

A TOO clean home

While many of our Facebook followers approve of a sparkling home, it was also suggested that a too clean, ‘sanitised’ look can actually be a turn off.

While you would not want mess on the floor, it is also important that people can imagine themselves in the home: it’s okay to have shampoo and shower gel on display in the bathroom!
