What to pack in a first night box

Looking to pack a box for your first night in a new house? ASPC's blog helps explain what you need - from PJs to tea supplies!

What to pack in a first night box

Packing up everything for a move is a huge job – and one of the most annoying parts of the few days after a move is when you can’t find something you need. This is where a first night box can be extremely useful.

It’s great to have a box with all your essentials in one place – and you can keep this with you in the car instead of in a moving van, so you always have it on hand – and it doesn’t get lost in a pile!

But what do you need to include? It will be personal based on the needs of you and your family, but below we take a look at some of the options to get you started.

Everyday essentials

You’ll of course have your mobile phone on you, but don’t forget your charger!

It’s also a good idea to have any important documents to hand, including all information on your new house. You may also want to store your passports, so you don’t lose them.

Kitchen supplies

You might be gasping for a cuppa after lifting and shifting boxes, so make sure you have your kettle, a mug and your favourite brew on hand to allow you to relax.

Of course, you may also want to celebrate in style, and if so, you’ll need to keep a bottle opener in your first night box.

We’d never expect you to whip up a meal on your first night (what better time to try out a local takeaway?), but it’s a good idea to keep some cutlery in your box, or even disposable plastic sets.

Bathroom supplies

Don’t forget the toilet paper. Some previous owners will leave a roll for the new occupants, but not in all cases – so don’t forget to pack toilet paper, as well as hand soap and a towel to dry your hands.

Bedtime supplies

A pair of pyjamas, toothbrush and toothpaste – even bedding. They’re all things you might forget about until it’s time to go to bed, and we know that you’ll need a good sleep after a busy moving day.
