Inverurie

Inverurie is situated on the A96 just a 35 minute drive north west of Aberdeen in the valley of the River Don. Well-placed between the north bank of the Don and the west bank of the River Urie, Inverurie is an attractive town set in striking countryside and is close to one of the best-loved hills in the Grampian Highlands, Bennachie. The town is also within easy reach of Aberdeen airport, which is just under 12 miles to the south west.

The town of Inverurie has a small population (approximately 12,760 at the last census) and is known locally as Heart of the Garioch – this is the name of the surrounding part of Aberdeenshire. An ancient Royal Burgh, Inverurie was originally granted its charter as far back as 1195.

History of Inverurie

There is much evidence to show that communities in the Inverurie area have thrived since pre-historic times. Bronze Age and Pictish stone monuments can be found nearby, while the area also boasts a number of historic castles.

These days, Inverurie is a bustling market town with lots to do and see. The town is home to a good selection of shopping outlets as well as a number of local attractions.

 

Things to do in Inverurie

The increasingly popular Taste of Grampian festival draws visitors each year from all over the world, and offers a selection of events promoting the best Scottish food such as celebrity chef demonstrations and stalls selling some of best fresh local ingredients in Scotland. Inverurie is also home to a popular farmers’ market held on the second Saturday of each month during the year, as well as Thainstone Mart, which has operated for nearly 150 years and was the focus of a six-part BBC documentary in 2016.

Inverurie’s countryside setting offers residents a great choice of outdoor activities, with some excellent walking and hiking routes. Inverurie Golf Club offers golfers a challenging 18 hole, par 69 parkland course with great panoramic views in a countryside setting abundant with natural attractions.

There’s also a great choice of shops in Inverurie as well as restaurants and local amenities such as Garioch Sports Centre, which offers a range of sports, games and recreation.

Schools in Inverurie

There are ten primary schools that serve the Inverurie area, with seven of them offering their own nursery units. These schools all then feed into Inverurie Academy, which is situated reasonably centrally. Buses operate to and from school for students who live at three or more miles from school and are within the catchment area. Catering to a range of needs, the academy boasts an extensive curriculum and currently serves around 1,050 students.
