History of Johnshaven

Rich in history, Johnshaven dates back to the early medieval period, with its current layout around the harbour dating back to the middle of the sixteenth century. Johnshaven was one of Scotland’s largest and most important fishing towns in the 18th century. Rebuilt in the 19th century, Johnshaven Harbour is now a listed site. Benholm and Johnshaven heritage Museum, which overlooks the harbour, celebrates the area’s history.

As with other east coast fishing communities, Johnshaven saw a decline in the fishing industry during the later half of the 20th century. However, Johnshaven harbour continues to operate today, with a number of commercial boats mooring there regularly. The area is known for its high-quality lobster, crab and shellfish, which are exported all over the world.

Johnshaven retains its unique fishing village character, and during the first two weeks in August, the village is home to Johnshaven Fish Festival which celebrates the area’s history and its prominence in the maritime industry. The yearly event draws thousands of visitors to the area and helps raise funds for the local Montrose Lifeboat facilities.
