Braemar

Braemar is a village in Aberdeenshire with a population of approximately 800, situated in Upper Deeside. The village is located around 50 miles from Aberdeen and a similar distance from Dundee and Perth in the south.

With its stunning location in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park, Braemar provides an excellent base for residents and visitors alike. The village is surrounded by the Grampian Mountains and the type of picturesque woodland scenery that the Scottish Highlands is famous for. The village and its surrounding areas also offer an exciting sense of the past, with a number of historic landmarks to explore nearby. These include Braemar Castle, a 17th century castle with a colourful past which is located a quarter of a mile east of the town, and the ruins of the Kindrochit Castle, which are protected as a scheduled monument.

Things to do in Braemar

Located at the eastern gateway to the highest mountains of the Cairngorms National Park, Braemar and its surrounding areas are extremely popular with walkers and climbers with no less than 24 Munros (mountains over 3000ft high) in the area. There are also a number of walking and cycling routes nearby which range from easy afternoon strolls, which take a couple of hours, to testing full-day hikes. Additionally, there are many more outdoor activities in the surrounding areas, with Glenshee, home to the largest ski centre in Scotland, only eight miles to the village’s south, and the River Dee, famous for its salmon fishing, also nearby.

Amenities in Braemar include the local village shop, a Post Office, two large hotels as well as Braemar Golf Club, which is the highest altitude 18-hole golf course in Scotland. The village also has a regular bus service to and from Aberdeen.

Schools in Braemar

As a small village, Braemar School is the only primary school, despite the large catchment area. It currently has around 30 pupils attending and 13 children in the nursery unit. When these children reach secondary school age, the school feeds into Aboyne Academy, which is around 26 miles from Braemar. However, school pupils within their zoned secondary school receive free transport to their school if they live more than three miles walking distance. This free bus service makes rural life in Braemar more convenient for families with children at secondary school age.
