Drumoak

The village of Drumoak is situated on the banks of the River Dee between Peterculter and Banchory, the gateway to Royal Deeside. Drumoak is also within easy reach of Aberdeen, proving an ideal commuter base just 14 miles to the west of the city centre. The village has seen several stages of development in the last 25 years, continuing to be a popular residential location and rural community with a population of around 1,000.

History of Drumoak

The village is home to the historic Park Estate which was originally a royal hunting park for King Robert the Bruce who gave it to the Irvine Clan as a gift for their support at the battle of Bannockburn. Drum Castle – regarded by many as one of the finest castles in Scotland – is located close to the village within a scenic 411 acre estate. The castle is believed to be one of the three oldest tower houses in Scotland and was in the possession of the Irvine Clan for centuries until 1975. Today, it is owned by the National Trust for Scotland and open to the public during the summer months when it is one of Royal Deeside’s top attractions.

Things to do in Drumoak

The countryside setting of Drumoak offers residents lots of options for outdoor activities such as walking and hiking, with the village forming a stopping point along the famous Deeside Way route from Aberdeen to Ballater in the Cairngorms National Park. There are also a number of excellent golf courses near Drumoak, with Peterculter Golf Club, Deeside Golf Club and Banchory all under 10 miles away.

Drumoak is well supplied In terms of local amenities, with its own pub, village hall, village shop, bowling club and church. The village is also served by Drumoak Primary School, which includes a Nursery Unit, and the nearest secondary school is situated only 15 minutes away in neighbouring Banchory. A regular bus service connects Drumoak to Aberdeen city centre, and nearby Banchory only five miles away, giving residents easy access to a health centre, shops, banks, post office, and supermarkets.
