Inverbervie

Inverbervie is a coastal town on the north-east coast located approximately 10 miles south of Stonehaven and 13 miles north of Montrose. The town is also within easy reach of the city of Aberdeen, which is 25 miles to the north.

History of Inverbervie

Inverbervie has a rich history and the town was granted Royal Burgh status in 1341 Impressed by the hospitality they received after landing in Inverbervie upon their return to Scotland from exile in France, King David II and Queen Johanna granted this status within the space of a year.

Originally established as a fishing village, over time Inverbervie developed into an industrial centre with the introduction of Scotland’s first flax mill in 1787, while textiles and processing industries still play a part in the local economy to the present day.

Inverbervie, which has a population of approximately 2,000, is an attractive residential location and is popular with commuters thanks to its handy location on the A92 and near the A90. Additionally, the village is well served by its transport links, which provides easy access to Aberdeen and connects to the neighbouring towns of Stonehaven, Montrose and St. Cyrus, amongst others.

Things to do in Inverbervie 

There are a number of local amenities in the village, including grocery stores, Inverbervie Sports Centre and Inverbervie Medical Centre. There are plenty of other amenities available in the nearby towns of Stonehaven and Montrose. The town’s main thoroughfare is King Street, which is where most of the local shops are located, as well as Bervie Parish Church, which is one of two churches in the village with St. David’s Scottish Episcopal Church being the other one.

Inverbervie has a great choice of outdoor activities both within the village and its surrounding areas with numerous walking trails and cycling routes, as well as golf at Auchenblae Golf Course, which is less than ten miles away. There is also camping and a caravan park just a short distance from the beach as well as a range of fitness activities, including exercise classes, badminton and volleyball, which are all available at the leisure centre.

Glimpses of Inverbervie’s past can still be seen today in the town’s Market Square, where there is a traditional Mercat Cross which dates back to 1737. There are other historical sites located in the area, such as the Lewis Grassic Gibbon Centre, located in the nearby Arbuthnott, which celebrates the Sunset Song author’s life not far from where he grew up.

Schools in Inverbervie 

Inverbervie is home to Bervie Primary School, which is a short walk from virtually anywhere in the town. The secondary school which this school feeds into is Mackie Academy, a large school with around 1,117 pupils enrolled. The school is situated in Stonehaven, approximately eleven miles from Inverbervie, however buses are operated to and from school, making this location popular with families.
