Things to do in Strathdon

Strathdon’s enviable position within Upper Donside in the Cairngorms also offers residents and visitors lots of options for outdoor activities, such as skiing at the nearby Lecht Ski Centre, as well as some great walking routes and cycling routes along with lots of opportunities to observe local wildlife.  

The area is also home to the world-famous Lonach Highland Games, which take place every year in August at Bellabeg. The Games start each year with a traditional parade by the Lonach Highlanders and include a varied programme of events including traditional sports and Highland dancing.

 

In addition to its natural beauty, Strathdon is rich in history and home to a number of castles, including Corgarff Castle, which is beautifully preserved and open to the public, and Glenbuchat Castle, an imposing 16th century tower house.

The local primary school is Strathdon Primary School, which is a small facility with around 30 pupils enrolled. The school feeds into Alford Academy, which has approximately 600 pupils and is around 20 miles from Strathdon. A free bus service is provided to pupils within the catchment area that live three or more miles from the school, making living in a rural location less of a worry for parents and pupils.
