Banchory

Banchory is an attractive town situated on the north bank of the River Dee, within easy reach of Aberdeen city centre which is fewer than 20 miles away. It is the gateway to Royal Deeside, and the journey from Banchory to Aberdeen by car is around 35 minutes. Banchory’s population numbers around 7,500.

History of Banchory

The town is steeped in history and culture. Originally founded in 1805, the town grew throughout the 19th century, developing into a popular tourist destination. In the late 20th century Banchory’s reputation as a desirable residential area began to grow, thanks to the town’s pleasant setting in rolling countryside and convenient location for commuting to and from Aberdeen.

The local area offers some important historical attractions such as the 16th century Crathes Castle and nearby Drum Castle, whose origins date back to the 13th century. Banchory is also home to a strong musical community, which is particularly associated with the locally born composer of fiddle music, James Scott Skinner.

Things to do in Banchory

Well known for its abundance of natural scenery, Banchory is where the Water of Feugh joins the River Dee and salmon can be spotted leaping upriver during the seasons of winter and spring. Often described as the gateway to Royal Deeside and the Cairngorms, Banchory offers the perfect balance of modern amenities and scenic country surroundings.

Banchory’s cultural life is vibrant, with the highly respected Woodend Barn arts centre offering a full programme of music, dance, comedy, drama and visual art throughout the year. The town also plays host to some great local events annually, such as the Banchory River Festival and the Banchory Beer Festival. And for those interested in local history, Banchory Museum has a superb range of exhibits themed around Deeside – from the area’s royal connections to its natural history.

For those looking to keep active, in 2019 Banchory Sports Village opened and provides state of the art sporting facilities, as well as being home to a whole host of leisure amenities, including a 25m swimming pool and another training pool, a 3-court sports hall, squash courts, a fitness suite and a café. The facility also hosts children’s parties making Banchory an attractive location for young families.

For outdoor pursuits, Banchory has plenty to offer residents – with opportunities to enjoy cycling, walking, fishing and lots more. The town is also a haven for golf enthusiasts, with Banchory Golf Club and Inchmarlo Golf Resort both a short distance from the town centre.

Schools in Banchory

In addition to Banchory Primary School, which includes a nursery unit, there are four other primary schools in the catchment area. These include Crathes School, Drumoak School, Durris School and Hill of Banchory School. The latter also has its own nursery unit. Banchory Academy is the main secondary school in the area. The academy is situated next to Banchory Primary School, making the transition into secondary education easier for children and parents, and currently has around 800 pupils. A free school bus service is provided to pupils within the catchment area that live three or more miles away from school.
