Brechin

Brechin, Angus is situated on the A90 between Aberdeen and Dundee and is just under nine miles from the coastal town of Montrose. A former Royal Burgh, Brechin’s population currently stands at just under 8,000.

The presence of a cathedral in this attractive town gave rise to its description as a city, which continues today in the naming of Brechin City Football Club as well as a number of local civic organisations. The cathedral, which dates back to the 13th century, is located in the heart of the town and is a fascinating place to visit, with a wealth of information on the area’s history, as well as a collection of Pictish stones.

Brechin features a large number of period properties with flats, cottages and houses with a number of characterful features spreading out from the town centre. History of Brechin

The Angus area is well-known for its Pictish heritage and this period in Brechin’s history is brought alive at the Pictavia museum, which has several Pictish artefacts on show alongside displays showing the archaeology and history of Brechin – one example being the Battle of Nechtansmere, which resulted in the unification of the Picts and the Scots and brought about the beginning of a nation.

Things to do in Brechin

The Caledonian Steam Railway is a popular family attraction in the area, providing trips for tourists to Bridge of Dun, three miles towards Montrose. The town also hosts a number of arts events each year which are popular with both visitors and locals.

For those who like to stay active, Brechin is home to a leisure complex that offers sports facilities such as a swimming pool, a gym and exercise classes, a climbing wall and sports pitches, as well as providing a creche and catering for birthday parties. Brechin is therefore a perfect location for all families as there is something to suit everyone.

For lovers of the outdoors, there are lots of walking and cycle routes in the area and the town is also home to Brechin Golf Club and Edzell Golf Club, both of which offer 18-hole golf courses in a beautiful countryside setting.

There are several primary schools in Brechin, including Andover, Lethnot, Maisondieu, Stracathro and Tarfside. Additionally, Edzell Primary School is at around 6 miles from Brechin, covering the neighbouring rural areas. These schools then feed into Brechin High School, which is situated on the edge of the town and currently has around 660 students. If you find a property in a more rural location, the free school bus service provided to students within the catchment area but who are at three or more miles walking distance from the school will make living near Brechin much simpler.
