Gardenstown

Gardenstown is an attractive coastal village in Banffshire set amongst dramatic cliffs along the north-facing Moray Firth coastline. Situated in Gamrie Bay, the village is approximately 10 miles east of Banff, 25 miles west of Fraserburgh and 45 miles north of Aberdeen.

The village, which oozes charm and tranquility with its picturesque harbour and winding streets, offers residents and visitors alike spectacular sea views. The coastline was voted one of the best in the world by National Geographic tourism experts and you can often catch a glimpse of the Moray Firth dolphins as well as experience the stunning sunsets that the North East Coast is famous for.

History of Gardenstown

Gardenstown was originally known as Gamrie and was founded in 1720 by Alexander Garden as a fishing village. To this day, fishing remains the main economic base of the area and it’s still possible to get a sense of the village’s past by exploring the older part of the village by the sea, where the harbour is still frequently used by working fishing boats.

Gardenstown’s population is just over 700, and it is the largest and most stable of the villages which sit on the cliffside. The village is known for having developed vertically rather than horizontally over the last several decades. The first houses in Gardenstown were constructed next to the harbour, but subsequent developments have taken place above the sea level and newer houses to be built in the area are towards the top of the red sandstone cliffs, offering incredible views of the bay.

This picturesque village and its surrounding areas offer a number of amenities including a local shop, a pub, an osteopathy clinic, a restaurant and tearoom ,Gamrie Parish Church and a number of golf courses nearby including Royal Tarlair and Duff House Royal.

The area boasts a range of great local walks covering the varied terrain around Gardenstown and nearby Crovie, taking in some historical landmarks such as Fort Fiddes, which dates back to the Bronze Age and is believed to have been one of Europe’s earliest industrial sites. There’s also a coastal path, which links to neighbouring village Crovie, and offers a perfect spot for spotting dolphins in the bay and birds on the cliffs

Schools in Gardenstown

The village is home to Bracoden School, a fantastic local primary with an on-site nursery unit, while another nearby option is Crudie School – just a short drive from the village. Crudie School has only 28 pupils but also includes an on-site playgroup. The primary schools in the area all feed into Banff Academy and buses are operated to and from school for students who live more than three miles away. Banff Academy is located around 10 miles away from Gardenstown and has approximately 800 pupils.
