History of Edzell

Edzell dates back to 1398 where it surrounded the walls of Edzell castle and, while much of the original village has disappeared over the years, the local church still stands. The original castle was abandoned and a new castle, constructed around 1520, is still a popular attraction with local families and tourists.

Other notable historic landmarks include the Dalhousie arch constructed in 1887 in commemoration of the death of the 13th Earl of Dalhousie and greets visitors of the village, attractively framing the main road in.
