History of Ellon

Ellon and its surrounding areas are steeped in history. Esslemont Castle (situated just outside the town) dates back to the 1400s, and Tolquhon Castle – often described as one of the most beautiful castles in Scotland – was constructed in the 16th Century. Nearby Haddo House, a Scottish stately home designed in 1732, is open to guided tours and offers regular events. The Ellon area also has a rich agricultural heritage that is told in the words of the bothy ballads – traditional songs that were originally sung by farm workers in the north east of Scotland.

With the discovery of oil offshore, Ellon’s residential areas expanded rapidly over a period of two decades to accommodate the oil-related workforce. Although the town itself has grown, the main shopping and business areas have remained very compact and the town is also home to a community centre and swimming pool.
