Rothienorman

Rothienorman is a small village that can be found in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It is located around 10 miles from Inverurie and 25 miles inland of Aberdeen. The village is often referred to as ‘Rothie’, and is largely rural with surrounding farms and beautiful Aberdeenshire scenery. It is a close-knit rural village with a strong community ethos. Well known Ice-Cream and Chocolate producers ‘Mackies of Scotland’ have been long established at Westertown Farm near Rothienorman and provide local employment opportunities.

There is a range of homes throughout the area, including farm houses and rural properties, and modern homes as well as more traditional properties within the village. The area is close to larger towns like Inverurie, which have excellent transport links.

Transport

Rothienorman sits on the B9001, which runs from Inverurie, and there are connecting roads from Rothienorman to the A947 (Aberdeen-Banff road) and A920 (which leads to the A96 Aberdeen-Inverness road). Inverurie has a train station with regular trains to Aberdeen and beyond. There are also a variety of bus stops in the area, with the 308 running to Inverurie and Turriff twice a day where there are connecting bus services to Aberdeen.

History 

There has been historical reference to a settlement in Rothienorman since the 1500s. The land that the present village sits on once belonged to the now ruined Rothie House.

Rothie House was remodelled in the Scottish Baronial style in 1862 by the architect and Lord Provost of Aberdeen, James Matthews, and it became the home of the Lairds of Rothienorman.

The area also previously had a train line, which closed in the mid-20th century. It is still a largely agricultural community, with rolling farmland and open spaces.  

Education 

Rothienorman is serviced by Rothienorman School, which is a medium-sized primary school with 5 classes and an attached nursery. Rothienorman School is part of the Meldrum Community Schools’ Network, with secondary school-aged children going to Meldrum Academy.
