About Strichen

Conveniently situated on the A981 between New Deer and Fraserburgh, Strichen is an attractive village of around 1,200 inhabitants and is one of the largest of 20 villages planned and developed in the Buchan area. The village offers property buyers a healthy mix of traditional cottages and houses alongside several more recently renovated detatched and semi-detached homes. Strichen also houses a small development of new build homes.

History of Strichen

The history of the village goes well beyond its modern-day inception. Experts have been able to date the land’s use for agriculture as far back as 4,000 years thanks to the Strichen stone circle, a local site of historical interest. Strichen became a parish in its own right in 1633, and expanded in 1764, laying the foundations for the village that stands in the area today.

The village has retained its history and is still home to several listed buildings, the most striking of which, is the Strichen Townhouse. Situated in the heart of the village, the building dates as far back as the 1800s where it served a vital role as a meeting point for markets and trade in the Buchan area.

Things to do in Strichen

Strichen offers residents a wealth of scenic views and long countryside walks. The North Ugie water flows through the centre of Strichen and provides several stunning views of the village, where residents can take in further sites of historical interest, such as the listed Mill of Strichen. For families, the community-owned and operated Strichen park offers a great place to take children to play or to catch a glimpse of the local wildlife. Community plays a vital role in Strichen and there is a range of events, exercise classes and youth groups held weekly throughout the village by local groups.

While Strichen retains its “village” feel, there are still plenty of opportunities to eat out, and nearby Fraserburgh has a host of excellent restaurants within easy reach of the village (just 15 minutes by car). For those looking for something closer to home, “The Frying Scotsman” mobile fish and chip van makes a weekly trip to the village. On top of which, local country pub, the White Horse Hotel offers a full menu of popular pub-grub style dishes. Situated just outside of the village, the Strichen Lodge is a popular stop for those enjoying the nearby lakeside walks and offers a full daytime menu alongside an afternoon tea option.

Amenities in Strichen

There is a small convenience store located in the centre of the village, as well as a family-owned butcher and a local café and antique centre, the Old Auction Room. There is also a local medical practice and pharmacy based in the centre of the village.

For primary school options in the area, there is Strichen School. The closest to the village, Strichen primary is a non-denominational school with full nursery facilities. The school aims to promote a positive ethos in its young pupils and prepares them for Secondary education at nearby Mintlaw Academy. The academy itself is a 15-minute journey by car. However, students who live in the Strichen area are eligible for free daily bus travel.
