“Full many a glorious morning have I seen”

Following our first foray into a photo competition last year, we have continued our photography competition in 2024. Like last year, we were very pleased at the number and quality of entries received, and have had more than enough suitable material to choose from. We have selected 12 winners, who, in addition to receiving a modest gift, are featured on the ASPC website homepage each month.

“Full many a glorious morning have I seen”

This month’s radiant photo displays the city centre at the start of a new day, and was taken by Glen Cairns.

This photograph appealed for many reasons. It is a view of a familiar scene, but shortly after completion of major refurbishment of a city landmark. It is taken from a viewpoint that allows the city centre to be seen in context, with a view stretching over the harbour to the harbour entrance, the North Sea and beyond, to the horizon and the rising sun.

This is a glorious morning in Aberdeen. It is early and relatively quiet (apart, that is, from the bin lorry exiting Belmont Street!). How would it be, you wonder, to be walking these streets on a morning like this.

How many city landmarks can you pick out? The harbour basins look almost unreal in this light.

There are many absorbing views here, but I expect many of us are looking at the refurbished Union Terrace Gardens with keen interest.

The view is one that very few of us will have seen. It is always interesting to have a bird’s-eye view of something. I feel it allows one to gain an enhanced understanding of one’s surroundings.

Without the bustle of working day traffic and activity, this view allows a more contemplative consideration of the cityscape.
