Energy capital of Europe
ASPC has held a photography competition, now, for 4 years. We have always been very pleased with the response and highly impressed with the quality. This year’s invitation to enter, resulted in 300 entries, which we at ASPC find very encouraging.
As is our practice, we have chosen twelve winners. In addition to receiving a modest gift, each will be featured on our website home pages -one per month.
Our March winner – Kate Spink – has chosen a location, and subject, familiar to many. The view of oil service tenders and our wind turbines in Aberdeen Bay creates an interesting, some might say controversial, encapsulation of an issue very relevant to this area. Green energy versus oil and gas.
Whatever view one may take on that particular hot potato, I think everyone can agree that Kate’s photograph is a pleasure to look at. We have become very accustomed to the sight of oil supply vessels in Aberdeen Bay, but there was some negative feeling, initially, about the siting of a wind farm in the bay, also. Now, I think, nearly everyone regards the giant turbines as adding to the outlook. They are certainly an impressive sight, and the engineering involved is significant.
I particularly like the effect that a still photograph has on the moving arms of the windmill, producing a feathered effect. It somehow renders the huge machines just a little less austere.
Kate has given us a lovely view of an everyday scene, reminding us that man - made engineering can add interest to a view.
