Aberlour is an attractive village located in Moray on the south shore of the River Spey, between Grantown-on-Spey and Elgin. The town lies 58 miles west of Aberdeen and 54 miles east of Inverness, with good road connections and in easy reach of the A96.

Housing in Aberlour comprises detached and semi-detached family homes, largely centred on the High Street which runs through the village. Homes have been built in the traditional granite stonework that is popular in Aberdeenshire, but there are a number of more modern homes in the area set further out from the centre of the village.

History of Aberlour

Known as the village of Abirlaur as early as 1654, the current village of Aberlour was officially founded in 1812 and named ‘Charlestown of Aberlour’. Today, Aberlour is a thriving community with a population of 1,279.

The village has a rich history associated with the whisky trade stretching back almost 200 years. Located in the heart of ‘whisky country’ with many world-renowned distilleries in the area, Aberlour Distillery, for example, produces the renowned Aberlour single malt using water from nearby natural springs. Offering tours all year round, the internationally acclaimed distillery is a must-see attraction for any whisky aficionado.

Aberlour is home to the production of another well-known Scottish product - Walkers Shortbread – while the village is also famous for its annual Aberlour Strathspey Highland Games, held every August.

 

Things to do in Aberlour

There is a good selection of restaurants in and around Aberlour, as well as a thriving retail scene with a great choice of independent outlets. The village has a good range of local amenities including Speyside Sports and community centre and Speyside Swimming Pool.

Excellent for sporting and outdoor pursuits, the surrounding area is home to some of Scotland’s best mountain bike routes, as well as hillwalking and kayaking opportunities. The village is a stopping point on the famous Speyside Way long-distance walking route, with the Speyside Visitor centre located along the route by Aberlour. Aberlour is also within easy reach of a number of high-quality golf courses at Dufftown, Elgin, Rothes and Ballindalloch Castle.

Just 35 miles from Aviemore, those who enjoy winter sports have access to the stunning Cairngorm mountain range on their doorstep. In addition, the rugged and beautiful Moray coast of Scotland is just a short drive away – excellent for a day of sightseeing with forgotten castles and forts dotted along the coastline.

Situated in the heart of Aberlour, Aberlour Primary school is the largest in the area with both a Nursery and provision for additional support needs available. For most of the surrounding villages in the Aberlour area there is a local facility that means the younger members of the family don’t have too far to travel. All primary schools in the Aberlour area feed into Speyside High School which is situated in the centre of the village and offers a free school bus service for children who live in the surrounding villages.
