Macduff

Macduff is an attractive coastal town situated on the Moray Firth around 45 miles north of Aberdeen, and just over 35 miles east of Elgin. Macduff is separated from its neighbour Banff by a seven-arched road bridge over the River Deveron.

History of Macduff

The town was established as a major fishing port with the construction of its harbour in the late 18th century. The harbour which is still busy today with the importation and exportation of various commodities is even home to its own enclosed fish market.

 

What to do in Macduff

Among Macduff’s attractions is its impressive Marine Aquarium where a 40,000 litre tank of seawater – the deepest tank of its kind in Scotland – contains many giant specimens, such as lobsters, wolfish and pollock.

The area offers some spectacular views of the Moray Firth, a good selection of walking trails, as well as a choice of golf courses. One of the most popular being the course at Royal Tarlair, which offers players stunning coastline views as they take on the challenging 18 holes. The most famous of which, a par 3 known as “The Clivet” has been known to cost players several lost balls.   

There is also an extensive number of local retailers and amenities between Banff and neighbouring Macduff, with plenty of shops and restaurant options. 

Additionally, there is Macduff Community and Sports Centre, which offers a range of activities in its 3-court sports hall, as well as meeting rooms and kitchen facilities.

For younger members of the family, there is Macduff primary school. The primary not only offers a full curriculum for p1-7, but also houses a nursery unit for a pre-school programme. The school values strong links to the community in Macduff and offers a range of after school  activities and sports clubs. For secondary options, nearby Banff academy is a trusted non-denominational facility with around 800 pupils.
