Blooming Brig O’ Balgownie

ASPC has held a photography competition, now, for 4 years. We have always been very pleased with the response and highly impressed with the quality. This year’s invitation to enter, resulted in 300 entries, which we at ASPC find very encouraging.

As is our practice, we have chosen twelve  winners. In addition to receiving a modest gift, each will be featured on our website home pages -one per month.

Our May winners – Kate and Matt Hancock have captured a lovely combination of old and new - the old bridge and the new cherry blossom.

The old Brig really is old. In charge of construction, which started in the late 1200s was Robert Cementarius. The bridge was finished around 1320. This was the time of King Robert the Bruce, and work was being executed on the Brig when Robert vanquished the English host at Bannockburn. At that time this was probably the only bridge over the River Don, in our area.

The area around the Brig of Balgownie, is now rather bypassed by the “modern” Bridge, nearer the river mouth. As a consequence, the area around the old Brig has charm and tranquillity.

A walk in the area, taking in the Brig and, perhaps, a walk to the mouth of the Don, (taking in the charming cottages at Cottown of Balgownie) is a great outing. Another great outing, nearby, is Seaton Park.

We were delighted to hear from the Hancocks, when we let them know of their success in the competition. They were so pleased, they told us that the prize money would be used towards purchasing their wedding bands for their upcoming wedding. We think that is great, and wish them every happiness, together.
